Information
ERGE
It occurs when stomach acid rises into the esophagus, causing heartburn, pain, and other symptoms.
- Hiatal hernia: This is a condition where part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm. It is often associated with GERD.
Surgical vs. Medical Treatment:
- Surgical:
- Fundoplication:
The most common procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus, strengthening the sphincter and preventing reflux.
Advantages:
- Long-term healing in many cases
- Significant improvement in quality of life.
- Reduction or elimination of the need for medications.
Medical
- Medications to reduce acid production, protect the lining of the esophagus, and improve digestion. * Limitations:
- Symptoms may return when treatment is stopped.
- They do not correct the underlying cause.
Complications:
- Esophagitis: Inflammation of the esophagus.
- Esophageal ulcers.
- Hemorrhage.
- Reflux-induced asthma.
- Chronic
- Non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Barrett’s esophagus (precancerous change in the lining of the esophagus).
- Esophageal cancer.
Why have surgery?
- Medical treatment failure: If medications do not control symptoms.
- Serious complications: If you have severe esophagitis, ulcers or bleeding.
- Deterioration in quality of life: If reflux interferes with sleep, eating, or daily activities.
- Cancer risk: If you have Barrett’s esophagus.
Important:
The decision to undergo surgery should be made together with a doctor, considering the benefits, risks and alternatives. If you suffer from chronic reflux and have lost quality of life, schedule your appointment. We can certainly help you with experience, knowledge and humane treatment.
