Bariatric surgery procedures are performed under a strict selection of patients by an expert group of doctors from different disciplines, composed as follows:
Bariatric Surgeon
Determines who is or is not a candidate for surgery as well as the most suitable type of procedure depending on the patient’s characteristics and risks. They are responsible for explaining the advantages, risks, and complications of the surgery. After the procedure, they follow up with the patient in conjunction with other specialists.
Cardiologist or Internist
They are responsible for conducting cardiovascular or cardiorespiratory assessments and disclosing the patient’s surgical risk and follow-up if there is any associated heart disease.
Nutritionist
They are responsible for assessing the patient’s nutritional status before and after surgery in the short and long term. They do not provide a diet but offer guidance to the patient to achieve dietary discipline.
Psychiatry/Psychology
They are responsible for studying the patient’s complete psychological profile. They help determine if there is any disorder that puts the patient at risk or conditions obesity. They provide support so that the patient arrives at the operating room fully convinced and with a positive attitude towards the surgery.
Anesthesiology
They assess the patient’s anesthetic-surgical risks, as well as monitor during surgery and in the immediate postoperative period. They determine if the patient requires support from the intensive care unit.
Endocrinology
They assess the patient from an endocrinological (glandular) perspective, mainly detecting thyroid alterations and determining if treatment is required before surgery.
